Indie Lens Pop-up Reel Talk presents "Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am"

Pre-event speaker:  Bernice L. McFadden, novelist and visiting professor of creative writing at Tulane University.  Her appearance is co-sponsored by Alpha Beta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc.

(TRT: 1hr 55 minutes)  The Pieces I Am is an artful and uplifting documentary on the life and works of the legendary storyteller and Nobel prize-winner, Toni Morrison. Directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders (The Black List, Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart), a friend of Toni Morrison’s for over 35 years, the film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

Bernice L. McFadden is the author of ten critically acclaimed novels including Praise Song for the Butterflies (long listed for the 2019 Women's Prize in Fiction ), The Book of Harlan (winner of a 2017 American Book Award and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work, Fiction), Sugar, Loving Donovan, Nowhere Is a Place, The Warmest December, Gathering of Waters (a New York Times Editors’ Choice and one of the 100 Notable Books of 2012), and Glorious . She is a four-time Hurston/Wright Legacy Award finalist, as well as the recipient of four awards from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) and a book blurb from Toni Morrison in praise of her new work.

McFadden has also penned five novels under the pseudonym: Geneva Holliday. In addition to her solid career as an author, she leads creative writing workshops.
