The Healing Room – Maafa Edition
Michaela Harrison, Asali DeVan Ecclesiastes, Joy Clark, Spirit McIntyre, Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theater Company, and Black fashions from Brazil by Madalena Negris.
Ace Hotel, 600 Carondelet Street, New Orleans
Sonic healing with genre-traversing, globally conscious chanteuse Michaela Harrison and powerhouse singer/songwriter/instrumentalists Joy Clark and Spirit McIntyre on guitar/vocals and cello/vocals, respectively. The depth of emotion and the richness of the harmonies that move through the music when these three voices combine is nothing less than soul-stirring, and Asalai DeVan Ecclesiastes brings the same level of intensely penetrating artistry to her spoken word.
Stomping into Three Keys with them is the Bichini Bia Congo Dance Theatre, established in 1979 by Jean-Claude Biougilla Biza (Sompa), a performance theater that promotes the preservation and practice of authentic Congolese Dance and African culture.
As if all of this weren't enough to make the Ace Hotel the best place to be this 4th of July, there will be a fashion show featuring the designs of Madalena Negrif, direct from Salvador, Bahia, Brasil, and some of the flyest clothes in the hemisphere on hand just in time for Essence. Don't sleep! Wrap up your grilling by 8 so you can be in the house early and catch all this trans-Diasporal magic from up close! No cover--just support the venue and the artists.
*MAAFA is a Kiswahili word that means “great tragedy” or “horrific tragedy,” referring to the period called the Middle Passage or Transatlantic Slave Trade.
