For the 19th consecutive year, Mardi Gras Indians are handed coveted awards at this ceremony. In addition, there is an induction into the Hall of Fame as well as a Memorial Ceremony. Another annual feature, Conversation with an Elder Panel, spotlights Frank "Running Deer" Nelson. The 2017 honorees are: Kim Welsh, Curator's Choice Award; Malcolm Suber, Jonathan Demme Social Justice Award; Southern University at New Orleans Master of Arts in Museum Studies Program, Community Supporter Award; Spy Boy Horace Anderson, Creole Wild West, Edwin Harrison, Cultural Traditions Award; Royce Osborn, Capturing the Spirit Award; E.L.L.A.
